Rental Car Risk - know the pitfalls of renting a car

Look around for the best price and ask questions.

- How old is the car
- Can I drive the vehicle for unlimited kilometres
- Can I take the vehicle out of metropolitan areas, or across state and/or international borders
- Do you get a refund if the car is returned early
- Who can drive the car
- What is the age range permitted for the driver of the vehicle
- Are pets allowed in the vehicle
- Read the contract before you take delivery of the car

Check your insurance coverage for:

- accidents involving your car only (often not covered)
- accidents while reversing
- accidents while using unsealed roads, e.g. while camping
- accidents caused by hitting an animal, e.g. cow or kangaroo

Damages and accidents are fraught with problems. Check on the following issues.

- How much excess do you need to pay in the event of an accident.
~ some contracts have different excess levels for different types of accidents.
- Can my credit card be charged for any damage to the vehicle
- Which parts are not covered, e.g. tyres, windscreen, under car (e.g. gearbox punctures) etc.
- Are you covered if you break the law, e.g. by speeding, or driving through a 'STOP' sign.
- Is there a bond on the vehicle and when do you get it back
- Does my travel insurance take up any slack in the excess

Confirm in writing:

- the price you will be paying
- any excess
- vehicle model
- pick up and drop off locations
- the rental period

When taking delivery of your car you should check:

- any damage, scratches etc, and note them on the contract
- on older cars check the lights, brakes, spare tyre, jack, wipers and so on
- check the car's features, cassette player, aircon, camper fittings and so on
- ask what to do if the car breaks down
- ask what to do in the case of an accident
- ask about filling the tank with fuel on upon your return

While driving the vehicle you should:

- contact the police if the car is not road worthy
- follow the recommended procedure in the event of a breakdown

Upon return

- return the car during office hours, and inspect the car together with a company representative
- if you simply leave the car, you may be held responsible if the car is stolen or otherwise damaged
- arrive early to work out any disputes before you leave the vehicle with the rental company
