Getting Around

The West End has an extremely rich and colourful history and is one of the oldest settled areas in Adelaide. Historically the vitality of the area stemmed from its rich ethnic mix. In the 1960s and 70s Hindley Street became a premier tourist and entertainment precinct. The 1980s and early 1990s saw a slow decline in occupancy and visitors, and less diversity of activities . This prompted a strategic and innovative Arts-led urban renewal program in the late 1990s.

As a direct benefit of the urban renewal effort, the West End Precinct of Adelaide has developed as a “hot spot” for arts and cultural activity, expression, public visibility for art and artists, information, support and production. With the location of ArtsSA into Hindley Street’s West Coffee Palace in June 2000, the precinct’s revitalisation has accelerated. ArtsSA deals regularly with more than 50 arts based organisations and more than 300 artists. In addition, The Adelaide Festival, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Fringe, Community Arts Network, JamFactory Contemporary Craft and Design, AIT Dame Roma Mitchell Arts Education Centre and many well established performing and arts organisations have relocated to the precinct in the past 10 years.

Adelaide is one of the few cites around the world and the only city in Australia to have been successful in promoting urban renewal through the arts - joining the likes of Glasgow, Boston and Toronto.

The West End is unique in the way it links arts, education, tourism, information technology and business. Partnerships between local and State government and West End traders and property developers have contributed to a long term investment in the creation of a unique cultural ‘quarter’ that it sustainable and has become an asset and focus for the whole of South Australia.
