Originally
named the ‘City Market’ the Adelaide Central Market dates back to 1869, when the
site was established as a venue for growers and wholesalers to sell directly to
the public. Its Grote Street façade as we know it today was built in 1900. It
became the Adelaide Central Market in 1965 but any Adelaidean hearing another
saying simply “I’m off to the Market”, would be in no doubt as to their destination.
The multicultural influence is one of the great attractions of the Market.
The stalls are filled with food flavours that have been brought to Australia by
waves of immigrants since World War Two – Italian, Greek, Japanese, Vietnamese,
Lebanese, Chinese, German and more.
The Central Market is the City of
Adelaide’s fresh food pantry. It buzzes with life and colour all year round and
becomes a special place for plenty of ‘regulars’, who just wouldn’t shop anywhere
else. The range of fresh food is exhaustive and it’s all under one roof. Fruit
and vegetables, meat and poultry, seafood, gourmet, cheeses and cakes etc. Shoppers
can also take a break in the hippest cafes in Adelaide. But it’s the experience
of the shopping that people love to return again and again for – the noise, the
fresh food smells, the variety, the colour and the atmosphere of an international
melting pot of food and cultures.
Amazing food and amazing ideas for cooking
it – It’s all here at the Central Market, of course – Adelaide’s premier food
centre.
